History

The Company’s founder, Robert J. MacFarlane, started the business in February 1949, when he began selling and servicing Royal Typewriters in Berkshire County for a Royal Typewriter Distributorship.

This one-man operation was based out of the cellar of MacFarlane’s house, where he taught himself how to repair the machines. After three years, MacFarlane decided it was time to expand. In 1951, with a business partner, he founded Standard Office Supply, selling and servicing a variety of business machines, machine supplies, and office furniture. At the end of 1953, the partnership was dissolved, and the name changed to MacFarlane Office Products, Inc. by which it is known today. The local Royal Typewriter Distributorship was folded into company assets.

Robert MacFarlane retired in 1991, and the Business today is lead and managed by his son, John MacFarlane, from their South Street office in Pittsfield. The Company’s product line has changed dramatically over the past years as the technology of business machines has rewritten itself repeatedly.

Although they continue to sell and Service Royal Typewriters and Royal Calculators, they carry fax machines, Konica Copiers, Ink Jet and Laser Printers. MacFarlane Office Products, Inc. also is a leader in the Networkable Digital Copier/Printer Market. MacFarlane's has placed many of these high tech machines throughout Berkshire County.

In 1998 MacFarlane Office Products, Inc. oversaw an expansion of their Business with its Supply Express Department. The Supply Express Department specializes in office machine supplies (Toner, Ribbons, Paper etc.). Under the direction of Rick Pierce, they now supply many area businesses with these supplies. The key to Rick’s success is the fact he can give great pricing, fast free delivery and still be competitive with large discount stores and catalogs. As Rick Pierce says, "People in Berkshire County simply prefer to deal with a Local Business".

With it’s history of service and state-of-the-art technology, MacFarlane Office Products, Inc. has positioned itself to be a leader in the sales and service of business machine and associated supplies in Berkshire County and the surrounding areas of Connecticut, New York, and Vermont.

Their wholesale division covers all of New England and Northeastern New York. They carry a full-time staff of trained service technicians as well as marketing and support personnel.
